History
We look back with awe and respect at the founding members of ESSE who in 1982 undertook a mission for the care of the elderly. ESSE was started as an outreach program at the Faith Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn by volunteers from local churches who were committed to providing day care for seniors. The program was intended to provide respite for caregivers and a meaningful way for their loved ones to spend their days. It was expanded to a second site at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wheaton in 1995 and to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Wheaton (since moved to Community Baptist Church, Warrenville) in 2001. During its evolution, the staff went from one of mostly volunteers to permanent employees consisting of an Executive Director, Program Director, Business Manager, Assistant Business Manager, Data Entry Clerk, Program Managers, Program Nurses, and Activity Assistants. ESSE still relies on volunteers to provide treats and to assist in activities, exercises and entertainment. ESSE is fortunate to have strong community support both physically, with the donation of space for our program, and financially.
